Young Leaders - Training
Our Young Leader training programme gives Explorer Scouts aged 14–18 the chance to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and learn how to plan and deliver great Scouting experiences for younger sections.
Training is delivered by both the South London Scouts County Young Leader Team and local District Teams, and is open to all Young Leaders across South London — you can attend any session that suits your schedule, regardless of where you volunteer.
Each session focuses on one of the Young Leader training modules, covering topics such as leadership styles, communication, behaviour, inclusivity, and programme planning. Completing the modules and your section missions helps you work towards the full Young Leader Scheme.
All Young Leaders must complete Module A – Prepare for Take-Off, which introduces key policies, safeguarding, and how Scouting works. The remaining modules can be completed in any order through local sessions or at our Young Leader Weekend Courses, which bring together several modules over one weekend in a fun, residential setting.
Please note the venue of each training opportunity below. You can book onto any session, even if it’s hosted by another District.

What the modules are...
Module A - Prepare for take-off (essentials and expectations)
This module is the essential starting point for every Young Leader. It introduces the Young Leader Scheme and explains how Scouting works, including policies, safeguarding, safety, and your role as part of the section leadership team.
You’ll explore what makes a great leader, how to create a safe and inclusive environment, and where to go for support. Completing this module allows you to start volunteering regularly in a section.
Module B - Taking the lead
Learn what it means to be a leader within Scouting. This module looks at different leadership styles and helps you understand how and when to use them.
You’ll think about what makes an effective leader, how to motivate others, and how to work as part of a team to make activities run smoothly. By the end, you’ll have more confidence in stepping up and taking the lead when needed.
Module C - That's the way to do it!
This module focuses on the practical side of leading. You’ll learn how to plan and deliver engaging activities, explain instructions clearly, and manage a group effectively.
It covers how to make activities safe, inclusive, and fun, as well as how to adapt to different needs and situations. You’ll come away with a clear understanding of how to lead an activity confidently from start to finish.
Module D - Understanding behaviour
Everyone behaves differently, and this module helps you understand why. You’ll explore what influences behaviour and learn positive strategies for supporting young people.
It covers how to respond to challenging situations, set clear expectations, and create an environment where everyone feels safe, respected, and included.
Module E - Game on!
Games are an essential part of Scouting, helping young people develop teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
In this module, you’ll learn how to run fun and inclusive games, adapt them to different group sizes and abilities, and manage transitions between activities. You’ll also explore how to use games for learning and development – not just entertainment.
Module F - Making Scouting accessible and inclusive
Scouting is for everyone, and this module explores how you can make sure every young person can take part fully.
You’ll learn about different types of barriers – physical, emotional, and social – and how to remove them. It also looks at adapting activities, using inclusive language, and creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued.
Module G - What is a high quality programme?
A good programme is the heart of Scouting. This module explores what makes a programme exciting, balanced, and youth-shaped.
You’ll look at how badges, awards, and themed activities fit together, and how a varied programme helps young people develop skills for life. You’ll also reflect on how to keep activities challenging and rewarding for everyone.
Module H - Programme planning
Building on Module G, this module helps you put together a full programme for your section. You’ll learn how to balance fun, challenge, and achievement across a term or year.
It includes how to plan for progression, involve young people in choosing activities, and make sure your programme links to the wider Scout awards. You’ll leave ready to plan, deliver, and evaluate great sessions.
Module I - What did they say?
This module focuses on how to listen effectively, gather feedback, and involve young people in shaping their Scouting experience.
You’ll explore how to use the YouShape principles — giving young people a voice, a choice, and a chance to take the lead. You’ll learn ways to gather ideas from your section, run mini YouShape activities, and make sure everyone’s views are heard and acted on.
By developing these skills, you’ll help create a truly youth-shaped programme where everyone feels included and valued.
Module J - Communicate it!
This module helps you build confidence in presenting ideas, giving instructions, and leading discussions. You’ll look at how to use tone, body language, and visual aids to make your message clear and engaging.
You’ll also explore how communication changes when working with different age groups or in challenging situations – skills that are useful both inside and outside Scouting.
Module K - First aid masterclass
This module provides essential first aid training for Young Leaders. You’ll learn how to respond in an emergency, treat common injuries and illnesses, and keep yourself and others safe until help arrives.
Through practical activities and scenarios, you’ll gain confidence to act quickly and calmly if something goes wrong during a meeting or camp.
