South London Scout takes on International Rover Week 2026
By Sophie, Bexley's Youth Lead...
This winter, I had the opportunity to attend International Rover Week 2026 at Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) in Switzerland. This was my first time visiting Kandersteg, and it was an experience that challenged, inspired and connected me in ways I will carry forward into my Scouting journey.
International Rover Week brought together Rovers from across the world, creating a truly global community in the heart of the Alps. From the very first day, I found friendship with people from countries including Taiwan, Australia and Malaysia, to name just a few. Despite our different cultures, languages and backgrounds, Scouting provided a shared foundation that made it easy to connect, learn from one another and build lasting friendships.
Throughout the week, we took part in workshops focused on dialogue, peacebuilding and understanding the different stages of peace. These sessions encouraged open discussion and reflection, helping us explore how peace is not just an idea, but a process that starts with listening, empathy and action. Learning alongside people with lived experiences so different from my own was one of the most valuable parts of the week.
The programme also balanced learning with adventure. Highlights included completing the Gemmi Pass hike and sled, which pushed us physically while strengthening teamwork and resilience. On my day off, I visited Interlaken, a town that uniquely celebrates New Year over three days. Being there during this extended celebration was an unforgettable cultural experience and a reminder of how traditions can bring communities together.
Another aspect I particularly enjoyed was learning games from different cultures and backgrounds. These simple but meaningful activities showed how play can be a universal language, breaking down barriers and creating connection. I’m excited to share these games with my local Scout group and use them as tools to encourage inclusion and participation.
International Rover Week has inspired me to complete my project using what I have learned about dialogue and the stages of peace. I’m also keen to bring the tools and approaches from the week into my youth lead role, helping to create spaces where young people feel heard, respected and empowered.
Attending Kandersteg for the first time was a truly memorable experience. I return to South London Scouting with new skills, new perspectives and friendships from around the world, and a renewed motivation to put the values of international Scouting into practice at home.
