External first aid course validation

The Scouts First Response Training covers the key skills and knowledge our adults need to manage incidents and provide basic first aid, for this reason it forms a vital role in keeping our people safe.

This includes knowledge of child related illnesses and the demonstration of child CPR which are commonly not included on external courses. This is to make sure that all volunteers who are carrying out first aid have the skills to manage incidents relating to children and young people. 

If you have completed an external first aid course and wish to continue to use it as your First Response qualification, you need to demonstrate to our First Aid Team that your course covered all aspects of the Scouts' First Response syllabus.

1. Course Content and Alignment

The external first aid course must comprehensively cover the topics outlined in the Scouts' First Response syllabus. 

• Life support: The principles of first aid and initial response (arriving and managing an incident), emergency life support, CPR (including technique for children and an explanation of what AED is and how to use it), management of an unconscious casualty (child and adult), and choking. 

• Trauma and injury: Shock, bleeding, fractures (ambulance imminent and non-imminent) and sprains, head injuries, dental incidents, and burns. 

• Major illnesses: Asthma, anaphylaxis, heart attack, stroke, seizures, diabetes, sepsis and meningitis. 

• Reporting Incidents, Illness and Emergencies: local accident book, local records, when to report to UK HQ, near miss reporting, reporting to external agencies, regulatory serious incident reporting, what happens next, learning from the incident, future planning for safety.

2. Accreditation by a Recognised Body

The course should be provided by a reputable and regulated body, such as the British Red Cross, St John Ambulance, or a training provider registered with Ofqual or Qualsafe. 

3. Evidence of Completion

You must present valid evidence of your qualification, such as a certificate or an official letter confirming the areas covered. This documentation is necessary for verification purposes.

4. Assessment by an Accredited First Response Trainer and additional learning (if required) 

1. The evidence you provide will be reviewed by one of our county accredited First Response trainers. The trainer will confirm whether the external course fully meets the First Response requirements. 

2. If there are gaps in the training the following steps must be taken.

Step 1

Complete the relevant child related illnesses conversion elearning. If you have already completed this to validate your knowledge of child related illnesses, we will discuss your learning with you when you attend your child CPR session and this will remain valid. 

• First Response Conversion – 3 day First Aid Work 

• First Response Conversion – 1 day Emergency First Aid Work

(This does not including courses that have been completed as part of our county Emergency First Aid at Work plus courses run by Walker Training Services)

• First Response Conversion – Child First Aid course
