Public transport and travel cards

When visiting London, the question of which travel pass to purchase can be very confusing. For those living and working in London they will almost always have an Oyster Card in their wallet and as a general rule of thumb the Oyster Card is the benchmark.

Buying a single ticket for one journey is very rare, you are penalised financially very heavily. A one-way single ticket on the Underground in Central London is double that of an Oyster fare and not far off the maximum you can pay in a day of unlimited rides using Oyster. On the buses you cannot pay with cash so buying a one-way ticket is just not an option offered.

If you are making a short visit to London there are aspects of the Travelcard that make them very appealing and if understood can make Travelcards cheaper than Oyster Cards, especially if you are visiting the major sights on a first time visit.

 

Where You Can Use The London Travel Options?

All three options, (Oyster Card, Contactless Payment Card & Travelcards), cover the same London public transport, with the exception of Gatwick Airport:

 

Travel cards

  • 7 day travel cards for adults 16 years & over £38.00, Child under 16 years £19.00

  • Each child requires a ‘passport’ size photograph.

  • For child travel cards, the date of birth should be shown on the back of the photograph.

  • The 7 day travel cards can be used for Zones 1 to 3, on train, bus, or tube, with unlimited journeys to & from London, at any time. 

  • One day travel cards. After 9.30am – Zones 1 to 3. Adults £8.00, Child £6.00

  • group travel [10 or more] After 9.30am Zones 1 to 6. Adults £8.00. Child £4.00
