We are in the process of making some great enhancements to our county web site and you will start seeing these during January.
One of the areas we are improving is our ‘volunteer with us’ pages and particularly the way we highlight the flexible ways that people can volunteer with your scout group or explorer scout unit.
Our aim is to showcase the amazing things that the thousands of adults across our county do to make scouting happen in their local community, the benefits that volunteering in one of our many different roles brings and how easy it is to get involved on their terms.
To do this we need your volunteering story which we can publish on the website. We are not looking for you to write pages and pages, just a short piece that tells people how you got involved, what your role is, the benefits that being involved with scouting brings you and why you do it.
Here’s a great example…
“I really enjoy being part of our scouting team as a parent who volunteers and I am proud to contribute in a small way to a fantastic Scout Group.”
I was never a Beaver, Cub or Scout, which I regret. When my daughter was a Beaver, the Beaver Leader asked if I'd like to come along and help out. I wasn't sure I'd be any good but my husband pointed out that if all Beaver Leaders had felt the same, our daughter wouldn't have a beaver colony to go to. So, I went to Beavers one night and really enjoyed it - by the end of the evening I was helping to run the games!
I’ve been involved with Beavers for around 2 years now. With my work it’s not always easy to go every week so we run a team rota and I normally go along every other week. I volunteer for a lot of reason. First of all, it’s great fun and I get to meet lots of new people and learn new skills. It has also made me more confident and I’ve learned loads of leadership skills.
Volunteering is also great because I get to share my existing knowledge and skills. I can see that I am having a big impact on young people’s lives and the fact that Beavers is their favourite night of the week is really rewarding.
We really would like to hear and feature your scouting story. If you would like to share how you started scouting and why you volunteer and help us recruit more adults into scouting across South London please email you short story and a photo of you (preferably at a scout evening or event), to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will do the rest!
