Wow, what a year. We've helped units across four districts pursue top awards, and directly managed canoeing and cycling expeditions, with two bronze, one silver and one gold team all completing their expeditions this year!
Looking forward, we have a jam-packed year full of opportunities for leaders and explorers alike...
Monthly Top Awards Clinics
These take place from September to May (June, July & August being set aside for exams and expeditions). During these sessions we help get Explorers and leaders over the hurdle of getting registered, logging in, setting up modules, adding evidence and actually signing off and submitting their awards. Those attending these free sessions are 90% more likely to complete their award. See attached flyer for dates and details.
We need additional leaders to help support these sessions, particularly those who hold a top award themselves. If you can give up a Friday once a month to help support young people pursuing their awards, we'd be very grateful!
Hillwalking Permit Training & Assessment
Getting qualified with a hillwalking permit enables leaders to offer hiking trips, and supervise DofE expeditions. We have FOUR dates available in conjunction with our colleagues across the river. These opportunities come around fairly rarely so sign up ASAP.
We have a few trips in the pipeline to help leaders get towards open canoe permits and British Canoeing Qualifications, including a mega expedition to the River Spey over new years. Please email the team if interested.
Once qualified, you'll be able to book the team's fleet of canoes and offer canoeing to your section.
The Top Awards Team supported our first cycling team this summer, who completed a fantastic expedition from Ironbridge to the Severn Bridge. Cycling is our most requested expedition method, and we're keen to develop this into a more regular offering,
We are looking for keen cyclists to join the cycling project and help develop a training programme. To support this we are looking to secure grant funding for a fleet of bicycles and accessories (available to book county-wide), but we need leaders to help support this. Please get in contact if this is of interest.
Key Expedition Dates
For units or Networkers wanting to join our expedition programme, these are the key dates. Note that participants must attend ALL dates. Unit's wishing to submit teams should contact us ASAP, particularly those wishing to expeditions in Canoes.
27-29th March - Expedition Training Weekend
Covering expedition methods (hiking/cycling/canoeing), camp craft, and refreshers on navigation and first aid. Participants should have a good idea of who is in their team and which method they are doing at this point.
TBC - DofE Bronze Practise Expedition (Silver/Gold additional training)
Ideally provided by ESUs/networks themselves. Contact us if you need support in providing this element.
3-5th July - DofE Bronze Final Expedition (Silver/Gold Practise Expedition)

22-29th Aug - Silver/Gold Final Expeditions
