Young Leaders - Missions

Young Leader Missions

As part of the Young Leader Scheme, there are four missions to complete. Each mission helps you put the skills from your training modules into practice, giving you real experience in planning, leading, and working with younger sections.

You can complete the missions in any order, at your own pace, with support from your Section Leader or Explorer Scout Leader. They’re designed to build your confidence and help you grow as a leader throughout your time as a Young Leader.

Mission 1

Mission 1 – Games

Run three different types of games with your section. These could be indoor or outdoor, team or individual, active or calm – the choice is yours!

You’ll learn how to explain rules clearly, manage behaviour, include everyone, and keep the activity fun and engaging. After each game, take time to reflect on what worked well and what you could improve next time.

By completing this mission, you’ll show that you can:

  • Plan and lead fun, inclusive games
  • Communicate instructions clearly
  • Keep everyone involved and enjoying themselves

Mission 2 – Programme Activity

Plan and run an activity that isn’t a game for your section. This could be a craft, a skills challenge, a teamwork exercise, or something linked to a badge or theme.

Work with your Section Leader to choose an activity that fits the programme and gives you a chance to take the lead.

By completing this mission, you’ll show that you can:

  • Plan and deliver a structured activity safely
  • Prepare materials and organise the space
  • Lead an activity with confidence and enthusiasm

Mission 3 – Programme Planning

Help plan your section’s programme by collecting ideas from the young people, discussing them with your leadership team, and helping to shape what happens next.

You could gather ideas through games, feedback forms, or informal chats, then work with your leaders to build an exciting, youth-shaped programme.

By completing this mission, you’ll show that you can:

  • Listen to others and value their ideas
  • Contribute to planning a balanced programme
  • Help make your section’s activities youth-led and engaging

Mission 4 – Programme Delivery

Take responsibility for leading part of the section’s programme. This could be running a full evening, organising part of a day activity, or leading an element of a camp or event.

You’ll plan the activity, prepare what’s needed, brief the team, and then deliver it with support from your leaders. Afterwards, take time to review how it went and celebrate what you achieved.

By completing this mission, you’ll show that you can:

  • Take ownership of an activity from start to finish
  • Lead others effectively and safely
  • Reflect on your experience and learn from it
